Neil Young — one of the ‘real’ good guys

I saw that Neil Young, the now-legendary folk/rock artist, is doing some work in support of the Ukraine — most probably against the wishes of the Yellowcake toxic waste Dump making ‘merica grate again — and it reminded me that Mr Young is also an avid advocate for farmers.  A little ‘digging’ unearthed a page of his other advocacy activities that would enrage any republican or ‘conservative’. And he’s Canadian.

• Anti-GMO and Organic Farming: Young has been a vocal critic of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and industrial agriculture. His 2015 album The Monsanto Years criticizes agribusiness giants and promotes sustainable farming.

• Support for Renewable Energy: Young has promoted clean energy alternatives. He retrofitted his classic 1959 Lincoln Continental into a hybrid-electric vehicle named the LincVolt to demonstrate renewable technology.

• Climate Change Awareness: Young frequently uses his platform to raise awareness about climate change and the environmental costs of fossil fuels.

• Indigenous Rights: Young has supported First Nations communities in Canada, particularly during the Honor the Treaties tour (2014), which raised funds and awareness for the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation’s legal fight against oil sands development.

• Veterans and Disabilities Advocacy: The Bridge School: Alongside his former wife Pegi Young, Neil co-founded The Bridge School in 1986. The school supports children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs. The annual Bridge School Benefit Concert raised millions for the cause.

• Music and Artist Rights: Young is a staunch advocate for high-quality audio. He launched the Pono music player to provide high-fidelity music in the digital age. He also frequently speaks out about fair treatment and rights for musicians in the streaming era.

• Political and Social Commentary:  Young has openly criticized various political figures and policies, especially concerning environmental deregulation and corporate influence. He has been an advocate for democracy and social justice, often addressing these issues through his music and public appearances.

We like Neil Young; always have, even more so since becoming aware of his concern for stuff vital to a healthy environment and society. And we like to play his music, which we, Young Neil and Horse Crazy, will be doing at Gingers Vintage, Goodwood Road, on Friday April 11.

There’s a booking thingy on the poster below. Please use it and don’t miss out on the rare and excellent outpouring of a tasty selection of Neil Young’s great music.
