The Coal Miner’s Daughter comes to town

When Coal Miner’s Daughter, country music legend Loretta Lynn passed away on the 4th October 2022, she left behind a legacy that would be difficult for any one woman to challenge.  Mother of six children, a professional touring entertainer and a champion of women rights, her extensive career saw her work with some of the brightest stars of country music and gather numerous milestone achievements on the way and this is all portrayed in a beautiful theatre show celebrating the ‘First Queen Of Country Music’ — Loretta Lynn.

Coal Miner’s Daughter, touring to major country centres and cities during 2023-24 is a musical-theatre presentation of Loretta Lynn‘s life and music. Written by Australia’s Amber Joy Poulton — who portrays the main character: Loretta Lynn—A Coal Miner’s Daughter and tells Loretta’s story from her early days in the hills of Kentucky to the last years of her life, including her close bonds with such luminaries as Patsy Cline, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson and tells of the tempestuous relationship with her husband, Oliver Vanetta Lynn and the tragic losses that bookmarked her career and made their way into her songs.

”Loretta was lucky enough to have been nutured and encouraged in her early years as singer/songwriter by the great Patsy Cline”, explained Amber Joy. “To have such an established star like Patsy vouching for Loretta really helped her to fast-track her career but was also a friend of the heart who stood by her in her struggle to find a place for women in what was a heavily male-dominated country music business at that time.”

Loretta Lynn carved out a unique niche, writing and performing her own songs — typically about her own life and some that were deemed to risqué for commercial radio, for six decades —  amassing awards and accolades from the music industry and her peers and earned the biggest Nashville honour of being named the first female artist to be awarded Entertainer of the Year in 1972.

Amber Joy Poulton penned Coal Miner’s Daughter out of respect and love of Loretta Lynn and her music and is herself no stranger to the struggle still facing many women in the industry today. With a portfolio of four original original albums and a classic Queens of Country album as well as a tribute to Loretta Lynn’s own songs in Honky Tonk Angels, she has toured relentlessly for the last for the past 11 years with her own band, The Holy Men, sometimes solo and more recently with Beccy Cole and Adam Harvey.

Her recent touring of A Coal Miner’s Daughter saw it perform to a collective audience of almost 10,000.

(In an eerie twist of fate, at that very moment of Loretta Lynnes’ passing in her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee (US), miles away in Australia, Amber Joy Poulton was taking to the stage for opening night of the recent Australian tour of Coal Miner’s Daughter.)

“This next tour is a special one and the focus is not only on visiting the big cities but also the regional towns. Being a country girl myself, I know how much country folk love their music but may not be able to get on the road to ‘the big smoke’ for shows like this”, said Amber.
