Making history on the oldest silent stage

When Amber Joy Poulton, Lizzy Moore and The Holy Men step on stage at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona, Queensland to present their musical theatre event ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’, they will be stepping into a unique and quirky corner of showbiz history.

Built in 1921, the Majestic Theatre has been touted as the oldest authentic silent movie theatre in the world — yes, the world! —  and the longest continuously operating cinema in Australia.

Although the interior was extensively refurbished recently, the original building is still a rare, and functional, example of a pre-World War II country hall that was converted into a picture theatre.

The Majestic Theatre has been a cultural landmark and a cornerstone of the local arts scene for more than a century. The theatre’s rich heritage includes hosting a diverse range of performances, from silent movies to live plays.

“It has history,” says Amber Joy Poulton, multi-awarded songstress, writer and star of ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ — the incredible life and music of country legend Loretta Lynn, “…and we love history! And we love to play country music from the Golden Age when stars like Loretta and Patsy Cline were celebrated for their forthright attitudes and iconic songs.

‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ has enjoyed outstanding success over recent years and is now touring country centres.

“With the escalating cost of travel and accommodation many people are unable or unlikely to travel to a city to see a show,” Amber says. “Well, we’re on the road and bringing our show to them!

“We’ll be presenting ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ at The Majestic on Friday, November 24, and we consider ourselves privileged to be a part of the theatre’s ongoing history.”
